Design Canberra Festival 2016 is in full swing. Running from 27 October until 25 November, there are over 100 events in the program that spans all disciplines of design — from architecture to craft, and everything in between.
One event that’s a stand out in the program is the Innovative Architecture by Emerging Architects Bus Tour. Happening on 19 November, this tour will take you to a variety of projects, including architect’s own houses, and will showcase affordable and sustainable solutions in architecture.
What’s most exciting about the tour is each project will have the design architect, client, and builder present so you can discuss the projects with them — a great opportunity to pick the brains of Canberra’s leading emerging architects and get off the record information and tips.
O’Connor House, a recent project by Jess of de Rome Architects, is one of the stops on the tour.
“This custom designed home was commissioned by an owner-builder client to replace their existing dwelling, a little old weatherboard house.
“The key considerations were sustainability, orientation and flexibility so this new single storey dwelling has north-facing living areas, oversized eaves to respond to the site’s orientation and other energy efficient design inclusions that we’ll talk more about on the tour.”
Jess says the bus tour focuses on projects that showcase strong design and cost effective builds.
“It’s not about flashy finishes, rather an opportunity to talk about the energy efficient features and unique design aspects of each project.”
If you’ve visiting Canberra this month, you can browse the full program and secure your place to an event by registering on their website (some events do have a ticket fee) or purchase a ticket to the emerging architects bus tour here.
