Tired bathroom gets a modern marble makeover

Who doesn’t love a good renovation before and after?! Today Simon Gunn of Gunn Building shares his latest bathroom reno. In this space, he gave a tired bathroom to a modern marble makeover… or faux marble we should say!

Take a look at this bathroom renovation with us and get Simon’s tips on creating a functional family bathroom.

Stripped room
Space opened

Creating a functional family bathroom was the brief and so Simon started with spacial planning and designing a new bathroom layout.

“The original bathroom had a vanity, bath and shower with a separate toilet. We maximised space by removing the toilet sliding door to open the room,” explains Simon.

The entire bathroom was stripped, re-sheeted, waterproofed and retiled.

“Once we re-sheeted the bathroom and saw how much natural light there was from the original window, we made the decision to add a skylight above the shower. This brings plenty of natural light to the back of the room.

“A streamline in-line fan was also added to keep all the ceiling fittings — skylight, down lights and fan — circular and and unobtrusive.”

With a practical, larger bathroom layout, Simon got to work on updating the bathroom fixtures and fittings.

The new design gave us the space we needed for a large frameless shower and plenty of additional storage.

That storage includes a large six-draw bamboo floating vanity Simon designed and installed for the client. As well as an additional bamboo drawer unit by the door and a tall cupboard near the shower.

“It was important to the client that all switches and controls were hidden. So the tall bamboo unit contains the instant hot water, under tile heating and heated towel rail controls.

“I also designed a drawer unit with power points built into the drawers so appliances like hair dryers can remain plugged into the drawers as they open — the power point moves in and out with the drawer.”

We love how the large format wall tiles and oversized mirror create the illusion of a much larger space. While the bamboo joinery brings warmth.
