Blockstars Kyal and Kara transform a 1970’s shack into a stunning allergy-smart family beach home

Kyal and Kara were always firm Block favourites of ours with their creative design ideas that put functionality and warmth ahead of ‘just trying to be cool’ or score points. You may recall that stunning man cave they created in just 48 hours on Reno Rumble? Seriously WOW!

Well lately they’ve been busy renovating their latest project — a six-bedroom, two bathroom home in the beachside suburb of Toowoon Bay, NSW.

And new parents Kyal and Kara aren’t just focussed on creating beautiful interiors, they’re also looking for clever new ways to improve the liveability of these spaces too.

“It was important for us to create a healthy environment for ourselves and our little man Ziya,” says Kyal and Kara. “Using allergy-smart building materials when renovating is an investment in health for every family. Moving forward with our next renovation at Long Jetty, we’ll continue to focus on these materials.”

So what building materials did they use you may wonder? Their focus was on creating an asthma and allergy friendly home that didn’t compromise on style.

Gyprock Sensitive plasterboard was used throughout the main house and studio to line the walls and create sweeping ceilings. The moisture and mould resistant properties of Gyprock Sensitive make it the ideal choice for building a space suitable for sensitive airways (it’s the only residential plasterboard to be approved by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice® program).

Old carpets were replaced with floorboards to create an allergy safe environment, while large casement windows and well-placed skylights assist ventilation and flood the property with natural light.

To balance the other interior design features of the home and create continuity between rooms, Gyprock Trio cornice was used as the finishing touch to the walls and ceilings. Trio’s dramatic three-step profile and strong, modern lines offer a subtle update to this more traditional home.

While Kyal and Kara describe the original house as having good bones, the 1970’s three-bedroom red brick ‘box’ with downstairs granny flat was half-renovated and required extensive work to make it liveable. Other additions like a deck made from 140mm blackbutt, have transformed this property into a stylish and functional home.
