White penny tiles, black tapware and a nude pink sink — a playful and chic laundry

We’ve all heard the saying ‘out with the old, in with the new.’ When Interior Designer Lucy Miller from Riverland Projects got hold of this dilapidated laundry, she flipped it on its head!

Today Lucy shares her chic laundry with us. Featuring a penny round splashback, matte white hardware, black tapware and that nude pink sink, it’s a fabulous example of when a strong design concept and a little risk pays off big-time!

Originally proving a reno nightmare, Lucy had the opportunity to bring new life to this laundry.

“The laundry in the original house was in a shocking way! Basically, we gutted the house but kept as much of the great mid-century bones as we could. The house now has a new fresh feel, and the laundry is located in this new section.

“The penny round tiles were leftover from a previous reno. They have a great mid-century vibe which suited the house perfectly, making it an easy choice. I made sure the laundry had lots of bench space and an overhead shelf that’s great for storing baskets.

I’ve always been drawn to pink… we featured some pink joinery in the bathroom at our previous house, so I knew I felt confident in doing it again. Especially paired with lots of simple white and a black mixer.

Lucy calls the pink sink “the laundry sink of my dreams” and hasn’t regretted this bold choice one bit!

“The pink sink is hands down my favourite feature. It’s just such a great shade of nude pink, not too overpowering. It stole my heart the second I laid eyes on it.

“It was a bit of a splurge, but then I realised if we just went simple and neat with white Laminex throughout the joinery, it would all balance out. There only needed to be one hero, and it was always going to be the pink sink!”

With a laundry that so perfectly balances simplicity and functionality, we asked Lucy for some of her laundry design tips.

“Laminex is a great option for joinery in the laundry. It saves on stone tops and fancier joinery fronts, but still gives such a clean look. You can get so many colours now! Add some fancy handles and you can really make it look awesome for half the price.

“Make sure you have lots of open bench space for folding. I love having room for the big basket to sit too — it looks great and is practical for storage. Remember to make the benchtop nice and deep so the washing machine sits flush against the wall. It looks much neater than having them poke out a few inches.

“Have a window or external door for fresh air. It may not always be possible but it’s always great to circulate some fresh air through. We ended up adding an additional hydronic heating panel in the laundry, great for winter and drying things a bit faster on the rack.”
