A lack of storage and just the need of a refresh is what sparked this modern farmhouse kitchen renovation.

“This kitchen is the heart of the home for my client — a mother with 2 teenage boys,” Lynda explains.

“They wanted to update the kitchen as it was pokey and there wasn’t enough storage. Everything was breaking, so it was time for an update.

“They loved the style we had been doing when they looked us up on Instagram, which at the time focused on modern farmhouse. What I love the most is that she wasn’t afraid to use soft colour to really make an impact in their smaller home.”

The soft green cabinetry is what stole our hearts, but there are so many beautiful elements to make up this modern farmhouse kitchen.

“Our client loves green so we knew we would be able to incorporate it into the design. The kitchen cabinetry is in a 2pak finish in the colour Moorland by Dulux,” smiles Lynda.

“Adding soft colours is always incorporated into our farmhouse design aesthetic.

“We were really left to design the kitchen however we pleased, but we did have a list of requirements in relation to the function. In particular, she wanted more storage and a larger bench space.

“We knew we had to update the flooring to get a better feel in the home overall. It is Hybrid timber flooring titan home oak traditional from Choices Flooring.

“The benchtop is YDL Stone in Rosemee and the timber is Polytec prime oak in woodmatt finish.

“The splashback tiles are a handmade-look tile in matt white 100×100 from Three Balls Red.

“A favourite feature in this space is the large farmhouse sink. It’s gorgeous! It’s the Henley double fluted farmhouse sink from ABI Interiors. We paired it with brushed brass taps and handles, also from ABI Interiors.

“And the piece that I feel really brings the space together are the feature lights. These are the Jessie pendant lights from Ivory and Deane.”

When working with a modern farmhouse aesthetic, Lynda incorporated a roman blind — a feature that often gets overlooked in kitchens, but in this case, seriously brings the vibes.

“The roman blind we placed above the farmhouse sink really makes our heart sing!” says Lynda with a laugh.

“The roman blind is made from Warwick Zora fabric in the colour opal. It was made by A Curtains & Blinds.

No stranger to a beautiful kitchen renovation, we asked Lynda her top tips for designing a beautiful, yet functional kitchen.

“Design with function in mind first and then add in the beautiful design elements. There’s no point having a kitchen that looks great but doesn’t function well,” says Lynda wisely.

“Another tip is incorporate plenty of storage. For example, make the most of those blind corners by adding pull out internal shelves.

“If you’re not having an integrated fridge, leave some space around your existing fridge space to allow for upgrading to a larger one later on. This also leaves space for broom storage for those random spills.

“Don’t forget to add in some feature lighting. Beautiful pendants truly do make a space, but these are just for mood lighting so you’ll also need to incorporate some downlights to make working in your kitchen more functional.

“There are a lot of hidden expenses in kitchen renovations and they can add up really fast! Make sure you’ve got your list of must-haves, and then the nice-to-haves can be added at the end.”
