Country-style interior trends for 2024

The new year means a fresh wave of interior design trends to inspire and transform our homes. And if the 2024 trends tell us anything, it’s that they will be anything but bland. Country-style interiors have been gaining popularity for years and this year it’s cementing itself as one of the top interior design styles.

Let’s take a look at the latest colours, materials and design elements emerging as country-style interior trends in 2024. We’ll also give you all the styling tips and tricks to check off to effortlessly pull off this style, like buy quilt, add textured rugs, and display rustic crockery.

Chequerboard

Black and white chequered floors are a classic flooring choice, but the new chequerboard style coming through as one of the country-style trends for 2024 is bolder and brighter. Green and white, blue and white, or beige and white are just some of the colour combos making a big splash. Elevate the look by selecting natural stone instead of porcelain tile. For example, verde green marble and white statuario marble is what dreams are made of!

As well as being a popular flooring pattern, this year chequerboard is also making its way onto walls. Kitchen splashbacks or outdoor kitchens are just a few areas of the home where you could embrace this trend.

Rug layering

You know how much we love using rugs to define zones, anchor furniture, and add warmth and texture. And what’s better than one rug? Two of course! Laying rugs on top of each other in contrasting yet complementary colours and patterns enhances the sense of comfort and cosiness.

To avoid colours and patterns from overwhelming each other, stick to a cohesive palette of three to four shades in different patterns and textures for an eclectic effect achieved with ease. Alternatively, you can layer a boldly patterned rug onto a large, plain base for a stylish border effect. Jute or sisal are perfect options for that neutral base 😉

Splatterware

According to home decorating Queen Martha Stewart, splatterware is also making a massive comeback in traditional style interiors. The vibrant and irregular splatters on the dinnerware create a lively and artistic appeal, adding a touch of whimsy to table settings. This trend is gaining popularity as it provides a contemporary and stylish alternative to traditional dinnerware, while also bringing a sense of nostalgia.

You have to think less is more to get the best speckled effect. The eye-catching shots of colour mixed and matched with other block colour crockery will create an inviting table setting for your next special occasion.

Trellis

Another of the big country-style interior trends that’s hard to miss is the rise of trellis. Trellis is traditionally a framework or structure of open latticework used for climbing plants to grow against garden walls. Just take a peek at our Erskineville courtyard project below. However, trellis is now being used in new, creative ways. For example, balustrade wire instead of timber latticework, and using modern shapes instead of traditional diamond patterns. Let’s just say there are many ways this classic design is being reimagined so don’t be shy to try something outside the box!

Symmetry in styling

Usually we’re fans of working in odd numbers when styling the home. For example, styling a vignette with an odd number of objects or clustering 3 cushions on the sofa. But when it comes to the country aesthetic, symmetry is your friend. For example, you can bookend a sideboard by placing a table lamp on either side. This creates a luxe, sophisticated look that also offers plenty of ambient lighting.

The styling trick of symmetry also works especially well when creating a gallery wall. Use a simple 4 x 4 grid pattern of matching frames for a classic, elevated gallery wall. It will give your space a designer touch for little cost. These look especially great in wide hallways, living rooms and master bedrooms.

Open shelving

Kitchen shelving offers the opportunity to perfectly blend functionality and aesthetics to create stunning storage options. Whether it’s a small pocket shelf in overhead cabinets, open shelves flanking either side of a rangehood or a full wall of open kitchen shelving, we’ve got all the kitchen shelf styling tips you need.

To nail the country-style trend, choose decor like copper pots, speckled ceramics, beautiful cookbooks and antique kitchenware. Glass jars and indoor plants are also great choices.

Wide stripes

Finally, another of the big country-style interior trends to embrace this year is wide stripes. While pinstripes and of course gingham have dominated for years, in 2024 the it pattern is wide stripes! Big and bold, you can make a striking impact with bright, unexpected colourways.

Wide striped textiles, like cushions, are an easy and simple way to freshen up any room in the house. Or if you really love the look, why not commit to wide stripes by using it as a wallpaper pattern or painting walls in this pattern. Pair the intense effect with block-printed florals to soften the overall finish.
