Today’s home tour is a jaw-dropper. And we think you’ll agree, it’s the type of home that deserves a spot on Grand Designs. Cliffhanger House boasts uninterrupted panoramic views and a design that sees it seemingly float in the air.
We chat with Joe Adsett, Director at Joe Adsett Architects, and the mastermind behind this sculptural triumph. Come take a look.

It’s not every day you get to take a look inside a home as spectacular as Cliffhanger House.
“Cliffhanger House is a family home. It features 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms as well as an additional powder room. There are 2 living areas and a 6 car garage,” Joe tells us.
“It sits on an expansive, grassed sloping site located in Toowoomba, Queensland. It offers unparalleled views of the Great Dividing Range. The location is pretty special — and was certainly a challenge!”
With its Grand Designs-worthy style, Cliffhanger House looks as if it is just floating mid-air.
“The brief from the clients was to design a home that harmonised with the surroundings,” Joe says.
“It was really important for them to make the most of the beauty and natural landscape that surrounds them. The design features an impressive 6.5m concrete cantilever and full-height glazing along the entire eastern façade.
“These really embrace the panoramic views from east of Brisbane toward Picnic Point and Table Top Mountain.
“The cantilever is further dramatised by the angled features and folded concrete elements.”
A home such as this clearly doesn’t come easy.
“There were more than a few tricky elements to this project. One particular constraint was from the sloped terrain we were working with,” Joe recalls.
“This led to the design of the cantilever. It allowed us to generate additional space, while distancing from the landslide part of the property.
“It not only provided more room, but also gave further recognition to those sweeping views. Which, as it turns out, was exactly what our clients were hoping for.”
Matching the impressive external style, the inside of Cliffhanger House is just as sleek.
“This home lends itself to a more masculine aesthetic,” says Joe.
“It employs a controlled selection of external elements, primarily utilising off-form concrete and glass. The ambience is softened through the use of timber veneer and travertine porcelain tiles as seen in the bathrooms.
“The furnishing have been meticulously chosen to align with the family’s lifestyle. Think gentle textures and a carefully chosen colour palette. These work together with the concrete structure to evoke a sense of comfort and connection.”
