Once a home that’s main function was to be kid-friendly, this was a project that needed a much needed upgrade.
“This sophisticated home is owned by a family of 5 with teenage children,” David explains.
“It’s nestled in the leafy suburb of Malvern East, Victoria where historical charm meets contemporary style. It was an early 2000s family home in dire need of a glow up and transformation.
“The owners have children who are now in their teen years and were ready to transform their home from a young family-friendly space to a sophisticated, grown-up environment.”

The home underwent an extensive renovation across two levels.
“Prior to the renovation, this was a bustling hub for a family of 5. It had really lost its lustre over the years, leaving behind a neutral, uninspired palette,” David says.
“As the children grew and started to embark on their own paths, the family felt it was time to bid farewell to the old and welcome a more sleek, adult-friendly environment.
“The renovation was extensive. We tackled almost every room of the house including the family room, formal living room, kitchen, laundry and dining room.
“The bedrooms, home office, entryway and bathrooms all got a makeover too.”

The brief was simple. No. More. Beige.
“When The Stylesmiths came on board, our mission was clear. Eliminate every hint of beige, introduce colours and textures and create cosy, inviting spaces,” David says with a smile.
“One of the homeowners is an avid entertainer and dreamed of a kitchen that was both functional and luxurious. I think we achieved that!
The open plan kitchen, dining and living space is certainly a standout feature. It encapsulates the main colours and materials used throughout the house, transforming it from a boring beige environment into a refined and cosy gathering spot for family and friends.
“You also can’t go past the cleverly hidden butler’s pantry, concealed behind the walnut cabinetry. This design choice not only maintains a continuous flow within the space but also introduces a layer of nostalgia, evoking memories of secret childhood hideaways.”

It’s not every day you see a home renovation with so much colour and texture throughout.
“It was certainly a dramatic transformation,” David admits. “There’s a bit of a unique blend of ‘Brady Bunch meets celebrated architect Alistair Knox!’
“This eclectic style drew inspiration from the 1970s Eltham aesthetic, known for its use of recycled materials and mud bricks. The result is a home bursting with character and charm. A far cry from typical suburban designs.
Earthy greens, brushed brass, walnut veneers and micro cement were skilfully applied to create a sophisticated home with a cosy atmosphere.
“The main fireplace, clad in rustic ‘brick effect’ tile pays homage to Alistair Knox’s iconic brickwork.”

We can often steer away from colour from fear of creating a dark, closed off feeling. Bursting with colour, Warm Embrace is anything but. David explain how.
“To create a cosy, inviting home without compromising on light or openness, focus on layering textures and warm tones rather than relying on dark colours of heavy furnishings.
“Start with a neutral base in a lighter shade. Soft whites, beiges or muted pastels. These reflect light and create an airy foundation,” David explains.
“From there, add warmth through natural textures like wool throws, linen cushions and woven rugs. These bring in depth without overwhelming the space.
“Lighting is also key. Opt for wam, ambient light sources. These can be through table lamps, sconces and pendant lights with dimmable options. This layered lighting approach adds warmth and creates focal points throughout the room.
“To keep the feeling of openness, choose streamlined furniture with lighter frames or legs and incorporate reflective surfaces, like mirrors or metallic accents to bounce light around the space.”
