On Style Curator, we’ve featured some pretty spectacular houses. Penthouses, homes with fully rendered interiors, luxe to the max homes… but we also love featuring REAL homes. And today’s home tour is a home that strikes the perfect balance between beautiful styling, and family-friendly features.

Cause let’s be honest, not everyone can live in a home that hangs off the side of a cliff 😉 . Join us as Joanne Yeomans from Issy & H Creative takes us through this wonderful family home.

This home underwent a mild makeover, with the owners wanting a beautiful, yet realistic, family-friendly home.

“This is a 4 bedroom home in East Ryde in Sydney. It is home to a family of 4 who were drawn to the home’s inherent charm,” smiles Joanne.

“It’s a 1960s home with an amazing bush outlook in a quiet cul-de-sac. The family fell for the home’s distinctly holiday feel, despite its imperfections — such as the older kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

“It was lovely to work on a home that didn’t have to be ‘perfect’. My clients gave me a brief to create them a family-friendly home with a warm and relaxing atmosphere, rather than striving for perfection. So refreshing!”

The home keeps a neutral base with fun pops of colour through decor and art.

“When it comes to working with colour, I always ask the client if they have any strong colour preferences,” Joanne explains.

“But also, I work on getting a sense from the home itself. Things like its location, style and quality of natural light help guide me to know what colours will work. It’s kind of a gut feeling too!

“I often work with one or two main colours in a space, and tie in patterns and textures in similar tones to break up the block colours.

“Furniture, paint and curtains worked wonders in transforming the look of this home. “

The kids bedrooms and playroom are standouts in this home transformation.

“One of the best ways to make a kids bedroom work in both a fun and a styling sense, is simply to get to know the kid!” says Joanne.

“As a mum myself, I love to meet my clients’ children and always ask them for their input. Whether it be their favourite colour, hobby, sport, interests etc. And then with these things in mind, I tie their personality into the space.

“Sometime I get loads of information. One mini client even presented me with a mood board once! And other times, it’s just a couple of words.

“For this house, one girl wanted a sunflower theme and the other loved rainbows. These allowed me to get straight into it with clear direction. Also, wallpaper decals have come a long way in recent years and are a great way to add personality. They’re ideal as they can be removed without damaging the walls so the room can transition as the child grows (and inevitably changes their mind on style!).

“Some of my favourite features in the play room include the gorgeous floral print Kip and Co beanbags. The Koala Stunner sofa bed is super comfy and looks great too.

“And as we all know, storage is everything, especially in a kids space so the Life Interiors Noir round storage coffee table looks great and has bonus hideaway storage for the kids toys and crafts.”

One of Joanne’s favourite tips is to draw on colours from artwork to help bring a room together.

“I love the calming feel from the master bedroom with its blue and green theme,” Joanne says with a smile.

“My client had seen Carla Coulson’s series of Parisian girls in one of my previous projects and was really drawn to her style. She chose a beautiful print called ‘Centred in Self’. Blue hydrangeas are my absolute favourites, so it was a joy to bring this space together.”
