House of Harvee bathroom renovation - full bathroom

Previously a pokey, brown bathroom with separated toilet, Krystal was keen to create a sanctuary in her bathroom renovation.

“The starting off point was wanting to create more space and storage. I knew I had to get rid of the wall between the old bathroom and toilet and make it one big space,” Krystal explains.

“The original area was a separate toilet and bathroom and I umm and ahhed about bringing them together. In the end, I decided that having them in the same space was the way to go.

“I also HAD to have a beautiful marble vanity! The vanity stone is Champagne quartzite from Quantum Quartz at WK Stone. It is such a beautiful stone, I still love it so much.”

To create this blush pink bathroom, Krystal nailed every single detail.

“I fell in love with the blush pink terrazzo tile the second I saw it and knew I wanted it to be the star of the space! They’re even more beautiful in real life,” Krystal gushes.

“The pink tiles are New Tech 2.0 in coral terrazzo. The white tiles are called the Piccolo fan tumbled Thassos fan marble mosaic. Both are from Perini Tiles.”

“The vanity storage was built by Master Kitchens and Renovations. The whole cabinet is floor to ceiling storage. Two big drawers at the bottom and a tall cupboard with shelves at the top. So much storage!

“The mirror is from Designstuff and was just the perfect piece for the space. The brushed brass tapware and the sink are from ABI Interiors. The bath is from Highgrove Bathrooms.”

This renovation, of course, was not without its complications. But it all came down to precision and planning.

“To move the toilet into the main bathroom space was a bit of a process. It meant we had to knock out the wall and then build a new one,” she tells us.

“Adding the curve in the shower was tricky, and plumbing had to move which is always a bit of a nightmare!

“However, once the new space was built in and I could see where the toilet and new shower would be, I could stand in the physical space and really plan where the other parts needed to go.

“The planning stage was probably the hardest part as I wanted to make sure I utilised the space as best I could. It needed to work for our family and how we wanted to use the space.”

This bathroom has colour, texture and cohesion… so what’s the secret to nailing a bathroom renovation?

“I’m a mood board kinda gal,” Krystal says with a smile.

“I love playing around with colours and textures to make sure it all works together. I also find 3D renders really help to see if what I’m visualising actually works!

“A top tip to nailing your bathroom reno is to try and keep to a maximum of 3 different tiles. Also, choose colours that have the same undertone — this helps with the cohesion of the space.

“When it comes to where to save and where to splurge… I think splurge on tiles if you find something you cannot live without! And quality tapware is an absolute must.

“Save on plumbing! Try to keep the toilet, bath and shower where they are… if possible!”

We wanted to know Krystal’s top tips for designing a beautiful, yet functional, bathroom.

Be space smart

“If you’re limited with space, keep things off the floor,” Krystal advises.

“You can see we did this in our blush pink bathroom, by placing the cabinets on the side and not under the sink which gives the illusion of more space and height.”

Light is key

“Natural light in a bathroom is a must for me. Windows or a skylight can really finish off a space.”

Go big

“Big tiles on the floor really help give the illusion of space, so I advise opting for a bigger tile where you can.”

Trust your gut

“When renovating your own home, it’s important to think about how you and your family plan to use the space. Do what you feel will work the best for YOU.

“Also, trust your gut… sometimes you just have to choose something because you love it. I often pick things just because they’re really, really pretty and I must have them!”
