Hamptons style homes are classic, elegant and beautiful. But with a traditionally blue and white (lots of white!) colour palette, is there such thing as a family-friendly Hamptons home?!
Joanne Yeomans, owner of Issy & H Creative proves that yes, you can have a Hamptons inspired interior that’s also family-friendly. She takes us inside North Ryde and shares a huge array of inspiration in each and every room. Let’s explore!

This North Ryde home underwent a major transformation to give it a new lease on life.
“Home to a family of 5, North Ryde was originally an early 2000s home that needed a serious makeover,” Joanne tells us.
“I had the pleasure of working with the beautiful family who were upsizing from a much smaller house after many years of looking. They were keen to turn this tired home into a Hamptons-inspired haven with a focus on open-plan living and an indoor-outdoor lifestyle.
“The main goal was to create a more open and connected living, kitchen and dining area so they could spend more quality time together as a family and entertain with a sense of pride.
“Before we tackled this project, the home was dark, dated and enclosed. Think dark red timber floor board and woodwork, a dated colour scheme, old-school light fittings and window coverings. Almost everything needed to go!”
North Ryde works by showcasing a traditional Hamptons colour palette that flows throughout home.
“Since the renovation, we’ve now got an elegant, contemporary Hamptons style home with a lovely sense of flow and visual continuity throughout the home,” smiles Joanne.
“The cohesive colour palette you can see throughout the entire home was definitely done on purpose. I knew the exisiting red floorboard needed to go! In their place we chose a dark chocolate hybrid floorboard. It works perfectly with the navy and grey palette.
“With such an open plan space, it was important to have that sense of flow. The colours also translated really well to the upstairs bathrooms and bedrooms. The only exception being in the kids rooms which all have their own unique theme.”
The extra large kitchen island incorporates a clever shelf, designed to hide the structural column.
“The open plan kitchen and dining area is for sure my favourite area of the home. Its complete transformation has made such a difference to the family’s every day life,” says Joanne.
“We opened up the space and created a 2 x 2m island bench in the centre. This is a space where the family can eat, study or entertain.
We also disguised a structural column as shelving — a clever and unique touch that definitely sets the island bench apart from most others!
“I also love that it’s not all white. If you’re feeling bold, consider using a feature colour throughout your kitchen space. Be sure there’s ample natural light to balance it out, especially if you choose a darker shade.
“Alternatively, you can introduce colour to a specific area of your kitchen. For instance, a bold colour on the island bench cabinetry or a coloured splashback tile can be a great way to incorporate colour while keeping the surrounding areas neutral.”
