It’s not every day you think to turn a toy cupboard into a laundry… But that’s exactly what Joanne Yeomans from Issy & H Creative did to create this stunning under-stair laundry.
This before and after reveal shows how a small space can still be super functional if you just think smart (and stylish!). Let’s take a peek!

When the original laundry from this home reno was turned into a guest bathroom, Joanne had to get creative when it came to finding somewhere for the new laundry to go.
“This under-stair laundry was part of a larger renovation project I worked on,” explains Joanne.
“We turned the existing laundry into a guest bathroom, which meant we needed to find somewhere for the new one to live. We decided to change the under-stair toy cupboard into a small but functional (and beautiful) laundry.”
This laundry’s obvious stand out feature is the beautiful ocean-tone fish scale tile, which takes inspiration from the one used in the kitchen pantry.
“The home owners wanted a Hamptons feel throughout their home so we used a white, grey and navy colour palette with brushed brass accents throughout,” says Joanne.
The fish scale tile was used as a feature in the pantry. I wanted to get away from the traditional subway tile that is often found in Hampton style homes. My client was keen to have continuity in the design so we continued it into the under-stair laundry.
Working in a seriously tight space, we asked Joanne’s top tips on how she managed to pull off such a stylish makeover in this under-stair laundry.
“For this particular space, a stacked washer/dryer made for a great space saving option. We also incorporated some overhead storage, a sink and a pull-out laundry drawer. We managed to include the storage under the sink, thanks to some clever plumbing measures,” says Joanne.
“Aside from the beautiful tiles, joinery is king in this space! We were able to incorporate everything the family needed into a really tight area. There’s even some custom drawers at the other end of the stairs, which is where they store linen. Not an inch of space is wasted.
“We also invested in soft-closing hinges on the cupboard doors and drawers to make for a much nicer user experience.”
