Prevent stains and water damage

One of the key benefits of composite decking over wood is that it requires less regular maintenance. However, it’s still necessary to care for composite decks to maximise the lifespan of the product.

Simply sweeping your deck whenever you notice dirt or debris will prevent stains and protect it from water damage. This is because a build up of dirt or leaves can cause moisture to sit on the deck that will stain or discolour over time. Similarly, you should clean up spills straight away, especially those containing food, alcohol, or oil. You can also reduce the likelihood of stains and water damage by using mats, plant stands, or rugs around furniture.

Regular cleaning

In addition to regular sweeping, it’s important to clean your deck from time to time with warm, soapy water. Especially after parties, big storms, or if food or leaves have been left outside on the deck for an extended period of time.

If you need to scrub your composite decking, always do this in the direction of the grain and use a soft brush, such as a broom or dustpan brush. Avoid using abrasive materials, such as metal wires or bristles, that might scratch or damage the deck’s surface. In colder climates, you may need to remove snow or ice, and this should also be done in the direction of the grain using a plastic shovel.

Stain removal

As composite decking isn’t completely stain-proof, there may be times you need to remove stains. Of course, prevention is better than cure so that’s why we mentioned cleaning up spills right away to prevent discolouration. But if stains do appear, there are methods for removing them. For oil-based stains like sunscreen or barbeque sauce, a DIY degreaser can be a good option.

If a stain is really difficult to remove, use a somewhat harder brush than usual, but be sure to brush with the grain to preserve the surface. Like with any cleaning technique that’s a little risky, we suggest doing this in an inconspicuous area first. If the discolouration doesn’t lift, talk to a professional or an expert at your local hardware store about potential solutions. Be sure to bring up the surface’s construction as composite decking and enquire about the safety of any suggested chemicals.

Prevent mould growth

Mould and mildew development may also arise on the deck if debris and moisture sit there for prolonged periods of time. The best way to prevent this is with adequate moisture management, such as ensuring the deck is installed correctly with appropriate drainage, and to sweep away excess water after a storm or heavy downpour.

Keep the crevices between boards unobstructed. This means if your deck is exposed to the elements, you should avoid leaving mats or rugs on the composite decking. If mould does develop, you can make a mild cleaning solution of bi-carb and vinegar to treat the affected areas. Make sure you rinse well after applying to avoid contact on adjacent boards. If you are concerned about using this cleaning solution on the deck, especially in humid areas, get professional advice.

Avoid pressure washing

Pressure washing the deck may seem like a quick remedy, but it damages composite boards by removing their sheen and shortening their lifespan. It is best to use gentler cleaning methods to maintain the deck’s integrity and beauty. Warm soapy water is our top tip!

Avoid painting, staining, or using harsh chemicals

Avoid painting or staining your composite decking. These things might damage the deck and nullify any warranty. The same goes for chlorine-containing strong bleach: never use it, especially if it is marketed as a “deck cleaner.”

Because bleach is corrosive, it can damage the composite surface, causing discolouration and exacerbating problems with mould and mildew. Be cautious when choosing a cleaning product and also avoid any that contain sodium hypochlorite, a chemical that is comparable to bleach.

By following these care guidelines, you can keep your composite deck looking great and lasting longer. Even though composite decking requires less upkeep than wood, it’s important to properly clean and care for it to keep it looking beautiful for years to come.
