The team at Branche Designs was faced with a tough task, taking this tired bathroom and creating a modern minimalist design.
“The design brief from our client was centred on creating a luxurious, 5-star hotel inspired retreat. They wanted a design that combined elegance and functionality with a serene atmosphere,” Laura tells us.
“We started the design process by focusing on space planning. The bathroom was quite a compact space which meant it was imperative we got the layout just right.
“It was really important that all the functional requirements were met. The round bathtub — aka the bath of dreams — was a strategic choice. Perfectly made to fit the corner space.
“Once we were happy with the layout, we then shifted our focus to the fixtures and finishes. The result was a bathroom that showcases modern minimalist design.”

This bathroom renovation also used a few clever techniques that we’re totally crushing on.
“One thing we did was we opted for Venetian plaster on the walls instead of traditional tiles. This was based on our clients specific request to minimise grout lines. So clever! This decision was guided by both practical and aesthetic considerations,” says Laura.

The lighting in this bathroom had us intrigued. Recessed lighting in the ceiling, behind the mirrors and even in the wall niches.
“A carefully considered lighting design is the optimal way to create ambiance in any space,” says Laura.
“We used recessed lighting in key areas of the bathroom to create a calm, spa-like atmosphere. Like what you may feel in a 5-star hotel.
“Recessed lighting in warm white is also a great way to eliminate harsh shadows and creates a soft, diffused glow. Perfect for achieving a tranquil and relaxing environment.”

We were interested to learn more about how to design a beautiful but functional bathroom.
“Firstly, plan the layout carefully. It’s important to prioritise an efficient use of space. Remember to put the key elements such as the toilet, bath and shower positioned both logically and comfortably,” Laura suggests.
“Next, we always recommend that our clients invest in quality fixtures such as the tapware. Like door hardware, these are high-use fittings so they must be able to stand the test of time. Definitely splurge on tapware and save on tiles.
“And lastly, as a designer who specialises in renovations, I come across many bathrooms that have become outdated after only a few years. It’s best when choosing tiles and fittings to stick with a timeless, elegant style and colour palette.
“Kitchens and bathrooms are two spaces which are highly expensive to fit out. Ensuring the design doesn’t date too quickly is vital.”
