Modern interior design trends to inspire your next home project

When it comes to home design, we always suggest embracing design trends at the start of their lifecycle so you can take advantage of their full lifespan. By that we mean, if something has been trending for quite a few years, you may want to think twice before using it in your home unless you truly love it. Because otherwise, your home renovation or new build could feel dated before it’s even finished. So what are the modern interior design trends you may want to use in your next home project? We share our favourites in this article!

Keep scrolling for the best home design trends that are just starting to emerge or will make a big impact over the next 8-12 years. However, you’ll often find that the majority of trends aren’t actually new. Just like in fashion, trends tend to come back around! Many of these design ideas are also timeless and will stand the test of time.

Hero natural materials

The latest interior design trend (which has actually been done for centuries!) is to hero natural materials. Natural stone in particular is having a renewed moment in the spotlight. While white marbles, such as Statuario and Calcutta marble, dominated for years, there’s a new trend towards bolder stones. Coloured natural stone, such as the divine green of Boscolo marble, and more patterned (mottle and vein) natural stone, such as Chantilly marble are emerging as new favourites.

It isn’t just about stone though. Wood and natural fibres are also being celebrated in interior design more than ever. From luxurious joinery to floors in your home, timber and wood-look designs create a connection to nature. Options like luxury vinyl flooring bring warmth to your space, in a range of wood-look designs. Plus, it’s also durable and low maintenance — making it a long-lasting option well into the future.

Minimalist design with a touch of luxury

Another design movement we’re seeing is a resurgence of minimalist design. Unlike the stark black and white minimalist interior style of the ’90s, the new wave of minimalism is all about warmth with a good dose of luxury. There’s an emphasis on simplicity to create clean, calm and uncluttered spaces. It’s a less is more approach that lets the space speak for itself.

To create a minimalist look in your space:

  • reduce clutter by investing in hidden storage to keep things out of sight
  • choose a natural colour palette, using grounding hues
  • include statement pieces, but be intentional about what you add to avoid overcrowding the space
  • purchase furniture with clean lines (founded forms are trending)
  • use mood lighting to accentuate different features.

Skylights and large windows

Natural light can transform a space, making it feel more modern and spacious. While this is something that you may not be able to control in an existing build, if you’re looking to design your space, there’s plenty of options to enhance your natural light.

Skylights are an innovative way to let more light in, adding height and an open feel. Some are fixed, but others can be opened if you want fresh air flowing through the room. Skylights are especially popular in kitchens and dining areas, adding vibrancy and a fresh feel to the areas people gather. There are also plenty of modern window styles to choose from, like picture windows, sliding glass doors, and oversized casement windows.

For spaces with your windows already set, there are plenty of tricks to enhance the natural light. From plantation shutters or soft, floor to ceiling curtains in a sheer fabric, the key is to keep the space open to allow in the light.

Smart home technology for a futuristic touch

While this modern home design isn’t exactly one you can see, technology is a part of our everyday lives, and it’s making a big impact in home design too! It can be a great way to add that modern touch to your space, transforming your everyday lifestyle and habits.

Some technologies to consider include timed lights and thermostats that can be controlled with your voice. You’ve also probably seen the increase in high-tech security cameras and doorbells. Automated window coverings, voice activated taps and the list goes on! Consider how your home can help to simplify your life and add everyday convenience.

When buying new appliances consider energy efficient designs that come with smart features. Whether it’s a washing machine that can schedule your washing remotely, or a refrigerator that tracks the food inside and suggests recipes, there are plenty of options that are ideal for the modern home.

Multi-functional spaces for modern living

Modern life is busy and multi-functional rooms can make your home more practical. It can be as simple as a home office with a sofa bed for guests, a living room with a play corner, or a garage with shelves for extra storage.

You can also get creative with your storage options. Underbed drawers, a linen closet under your stairs, or floating shelves can give you a little bit of extra space to ensure everything stays clean and uncluttered.

Make sure to carefully plan each space and consider your lifestyle needs. When you have enough shelves and cupboards it’s easier to keep your home tidy.

Textural diversity adding depth and interest

Finally, we have texture — perfect for adding to the modern look of your home. Adding texture won’t only help add depth to your space, but it’s great for softening clean lines, providing balance.

Hard materials will create visual interest. Think the sleek sheen of glass, the industrial feel of metal and concrete, and the rugged charm of wood. Pair these with softer elements like natural linen, bamboo, and wool, and you have a beautifully contrasting space that you can unwind in.

Of course, we always suggest finishing a space with that final layer of style. Throws and cushions can also be layered to add pops of colour to the room, and floor rugs will tie everything together and give you a soft surface to walk on. Don’t forget your wall art — think woollen wall hangings and textured canvases for interest and conversation starters.

Modern designs are stylish, functional and thoughtful. By considering space, adding natural elements, and being mindful of light, you can create a look that stands the test of time. Invest in quality and use accessories to add colour and texture.
