Located in the village of Clunes in the Byron Hinterland, this tropical paradise won the hearts of its now owners from the very first glance.

“My husband and I purchased the property 5 years ago and knew it was ‘the one’ after the first inspection,” smiles Katherine Heapy, owner of Two Acres Homes.

“The home has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and sits on two acres of sub-tropical gardens with lush rainforest and a freshwater creek. It’s a pretty special place to be.”

Giving the home that resort-style feel was key when it came to tackling the renovations for Two Acres Home.

“Designing a home like this had been a dream of ours for many years. The result is a culmination of our time looking, seeking and exploring around the world.

“The property already had great bones with a Balinese feel and an established tropical outlook, so we knew instantly the direction we wanted to go with the renovations. We gutted the entire property and re-designed the house starting with just the structure of the home,” says Katherine.

“We love to cook and entertain, so a big part of the design process was to create large areas for our friends and families to gather around. A large entertainer’s kitchen was a must, so we knocked out the existing wall and opened up the space to connect the living, dining and kitchen areas. The breakfast window and 3-panelled sliding doors seamlessly connect the indoors with the outside spaces.”

The home has a raw, organic feel to it with texture a key component in the overall design.

“When designing Two Acres Home, our aim was to create an earthy, resort-style environment with a touch of modernity,” Katherine explains.

The interiors were inspired by our travels through the Mayan Riviera, the Mediterranean and parts of tropical Asia.

“We did this by fusing raw reclaimed timber, soft earthy linens and Spanish plastered walls with marble tables, luxurious aged-brass fixtures, modern light fixtures and custom-made pieces like the large steel dining table. We feel it really lends itself to its surrounds in the Byron Hinterland.”

Two Acres Home is a property that is perfect no matter the season.

“What I love most about this home, is that my favourite area changes with the seasons,” smiles Katherine.

“In summer, I love to relax by the pool and cabana, looking out over the lush rainforest. In winter, I spend my days in front of the fire with a book and glass of red in hand.

“I love to entertain too, so cooking in the large kitchen with plenty of bench space is a dream. Oh, and waking to the sound of birds, looking out to the natural surrounds from the master bedroom… it feels like a daily retreat.”

Alongside running their luxe, boutique holiday home, Katherine and her husband also dabble in creating custom furniture pieces.

“The dining table, marble side tables, coffee table, consoles, timber bed ends and outdoor dining table were designed and created specifically for the spaces they reside in. Two Acres Furniture is an extension of our Two Acres brand. We absolutely love designing and creating custom furniture pieces.

“We’re spoilt for choice living in the Byron Hinterland. There are so many places to buy beautiful, natural handcrafted pieces including Island Luxe, Bodhi Living, Hope and May, Marr-kett and Shackpalace. We also love The Foundry in Noosa. It’s a unique showroom with carefully curated pieces and run by good friends of ours. There’s so much talent around if you’re willing to look a little further afield.

“To create that luxe, relaxed resort-style at home, keep it simple and always trust your instinct. Work with the space you have and design out of sincere love.

Interiors are not just something that can be seen, they are also felt. The energy of a room is just as important as the style.

“I collect objects I love along the way and trust it will find its place somewhere. Let your home be a reflection of who you are and the story you want to tell,” says Katherine.
