Big girl bedroom makeover

Creating a beautiful space that could evolve over time was the key driver to this gorgeous girl’s bedroom makeover.

“I was keen to give Christie’s bedroom a makeover to reflect her needs and style. I wanted it to change from a childish room with toys to a more grown up space which could grow with her well into her teens with minimal changes,” explains Christie’s Mum, Georgina.

“Don’t get me wrong, her previous bedroom was lovely too, however the Interior Designer in me is always finding new products, new styles and I adore creating magical spaces. I just can’t help myself!

“The previous room was quite dark and colourful. We really wanted it to become more of a light filled space. For this version of her room, we kept everything simple and went with a lot of white. Her furniture was also kept quite neutral to last her into her teens.”

It’s obvious an eye for style and detail runs in the family with Christie choosing a number of key details in her brand new big girl bedroom.

“I was careful to take Christie’s character into consideration when making over her bedroom… her likes and needs. She loves displaying her pretty things, artwork and toys so I instantly knew a recessed shelf wall would be perfect for her space.

“Rather than just adding shelves to her room we gave her the shelf feature by incorporating it into a feature wall bed head using Porta timber panelling. Now she’s able to style all her favourite things along the ledge. And she actually chose the style of panelling! She has good taste!” laughed Georgina.

“Christie also chose the colours for her bedding and requested a pink rug similar to the one we have in our living room. I love getting her input when choosing products to go into her room.

“I find the best way to do this is for me to select 3 to 4 items that I know she will like and that work well together. From here, I let her choose the one that will go into her room. That way everyone’s happy!”

Having done more than her fair share of kids bedroom makeovers we wanted to get some of Georgina’s best tips for creating a gorgeous girl’s bedroom.

“Firstly, take into consideration your child’s needs and wants. Think about what they love as well as what works for you as a family.

“Second, keep it simple and fun for them. Kids bedrooms should always be fun!

“A great tip I love is to keep furniture neutral so it will last them as they get older. There’s nothing more frustrating (and expensive!) than having to upgrade furniture 3 or 4 times!

“If you want to incorporate colour or their favourite theme, do so through smaller decor. That way it will be easier and more budget friendly to change their room as they grow.

“Storage! Think about storage because as we all know kids have so much stuff! Use under-bed storage and incorporate extra drawers into their room. Use stylish baskets to hide all the awful coloured plastic toys and display the pretty ones!

“And when it comes to kids decor, there are so many brands I love. For the walls, Minnie and Me Interiors for wallpaper and My Hidden Forest for artwork. For furniture, decor and toys, Hunter and Nomad is amazing. I can’t go past Linen House for bedding and Rugs of Beauty for rugs.”

We loved taking a sneak peek inside Christie’s big girl bedroom. Talk about a dreamy space! Thank you so much Georgina for showing us around and sharing your tips with us. For loads more design inspo, be sure to check out Wool and Willow on Instagram.
