In recent years, the trend in interiors has been moving from crisp and modern to earthier and more global. While blacks, whites and greys dominated for many years, we’re seeing a return to warmer and more muted tones. There’s also a greater appreciation of combining old with new, and displaying treasured items, as talked about in this popular article on the Wanderlust style. It’s no wonder then that Moroccan rugs are trending and we want to inspire you to see them in a modern way!

Our favourite Moroccan rugs
Moroccan rugs use traditional methods of production that date back centuries and are distinguishable by their stunning texture and graphical prints.
You can find ‘the real deal’ in places like Tigmi Trading, a global store that curates responsibly-sourced handmade products from around the world, or Moroccan-look rugs can be found much more widely, such as at Temple & Webster or Etsy.
Of course, it’s hard to beat the beauty of artisan products (aka the real ones) but the cost can make them out of reach. Wherever you decide to buy them from, we suggest looking ones made from natural materials and a softer colour palette, similar to the muted pinks in the rugs pictured above.
Here are a few Moroccan and Moroccan-look rugs we’re loving…
How to style them
As with anything that’s trending, the trick is to look for ways to style them in different ways to make them your own and avoid them feeling cliche.
Moroccan rug in a modern setting
One of our favourite ways to style Moroccan rugs is to use them in an otherwise modern setting. Whether you pick one in muted tones of red or coral, or embrace a more neutral style like the ones below, these pieces can become a stunning focal point. Consider adding one in your hallway, living room or beside your bed.
A pop of colour in a neutral space
Are you one to always gravitate towards neutral tones of white, grey or beige? While there’s a soothing quality to these colours, too much of a good thing can be… too much!
Break up a neutral space
The divine Boujad rugs you see above feature gorgeous muted tones of reds, pinks and corals; punctuated with pops of colour in cooler hues. They each have a beautifully faded quality that can instantly add texture and interest to a room.
She labelled this trend ‘Softly Softly’ and says this pared back look focusses on natural finishes and a softer colour palette, similar to the muted pinks in the rugs pictured above.
A subtle pop of colour in a rug is an immediate way to add interest, warmth and texture to a space.
Of course, if like us you tend to prefer a monochromatic colour palette in the home, there are Moroccan rugs for you too.
You may well have seen the ‘Beni Ourains’ rug before — one of the hottest rugs last year and still so popular that Kmart recently attempted to make a copy… unfortunately this imitation falls short so we’ve still got this original baby on our wish list!
We love how this rug looks in a modern setting, against clean line furniture and bright artwork… for us it’s the perfect base.
