Indoor outdoor living with a peek inside the Kedron Street home

Our latest home tour oozes relaxed coastal vibes. The Kedron Street home, styled to perfection, has so many beautiful spaces to enjoy. And when the indoor outdoor living spaces look this good, the hardest decision is… where to hang out first?!

We take a look around this amazing home with the renovator, former owner and interior designer, Kristy Spencer from Bare Studio.

Situated in Glenbrook at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, this home was a true labour of love.

“When we took on the renovation of this home, I designed and renovated it with my own family in mind,” says Kristy.

“This project was a complete overhaul both inside and out. We also added a large extension to the front of the property which gave me the opportunity to give the facade a really dramatic change.

“I oversaw the build and renovation as an owner builder. It was a massive learning curve and definitely my biggest ever solo undertaking!

“The home now belongs to a lovely young family of 4.”

Bench seating for outdoor dining

Describing the home’s style as ‘Coastal Hamptons’ Kristy was keen to make the most of the views and embrace indoor outdoor living.

“The brief was to pay homage to this beautiful location, maximise the views and the property’s elevated outlook. I wanted the exterior to resemble a costal Hampton style.

“The property consists of 4 large bedrooms, numerous living areas both internal and external as well as a detached rumpus room. And of course, that wonderful sunken external entertaining area equipped with a built-in woodfire pizza oven, seating and a fire pit.

“I really wanted the interior to have a strong connection to the outdoors, so the use of window placement, skylights and large stacker doors was important,” explains Kristy.

“My main goal with this renovation was to create a flow and connection with the indoor outdoor living spaces.

I wanted it to feel like a seamless transition from the outside into the kitchen, dining and living room. This area is the hub of the home and has full view of the yard.

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, it’s just hard to decide which kitchen is the favourite here!

“I love the kitchen in this home! When designing it, I focussed on practicality and clean, contemporary lines,” says Kristy.

“The materials are all hardwearing to give the space longevity and minimal maintenance with a crisp, fresh colour palette.

“The loft ceiling gives the room a grand feel and is balanced by the stunning oversized rattan pendant. Velux skylights create a vibrant, fresh look and flood the room with natural light.

“But then of course there’s the outdoors! I love how many external areas of the home there are. Like the veranda with its view to the sunken entertaining zone and that fabulous pizza oven! There are so many beautiful green spaces to enjoy outside.”

As you move through each room of the house, there’s a sense of relaxation and calmness to Kristy’s styling.

“When I select furniture for projects such as the Kedron Street home, I look for timeless, classic, well-made pieces. Items that offer contrast, such as texture, pattern or a beautiful shape,” Kristy explains.

“I choose items that compliment the interior without being too dominant. For example for the furniture in this home, I looked for items in similar toned oak timber to match the flooring. Then I layered linens throughout the space to inject a homely, cosy feel.

“When it comes to light fittings and furniture, scale and proportion is key. I also like to mix up my styling with custom or vintage pieces to create interest and avoid an ‘off the shelf’ look.

“When styling a space, I suggest going for a neutral colour palette. This gives you the flexibility to change up the look of your interiors seasonally with inexpensive decor items and soft furnishings.

“And of course, I always try to use indoor plants to inject life into a space. They look stunning and promote calm and wellbeing.

There is beauty in simplicity.
