1. Declutter, declutter, declutter

We know you don’t want to hear this tip but the truth is, it’s the most affordable (aka free) and high-impact way to transform your home. Simplify what you own and only keep things that are meaningful and useful to you. By giving everything in your home a place, you can keep things organised and functional — making life less frustrating and your home more beautiful.

Plus, while you purge what you don’t need, you can also earn a little extra cash to put towards decorating. You can sell almost anything on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree.

So why not walk through your home and ask yourself the top decluttering questions:

  • Do I love it?
  • Do I use it?
  • Do I want this item in my life moving forward?
  • Do I have something similar that could serve the same purpose?
  • Would I buy this item again if I saw it in store?
  • Could someone else have more use for this than me?

Asking yourself these questions should help you make decisions on what to keep, sell or donate.

2. Opt for stylish furniture

Sounds obvious but furniture is often the largest thing in any room of your home. So before spending your styling budget on new home decor or artwork, take a hard look at your furniture.

Consider whether your furniture is fit for purpose? For example, do your bedside tables offer enough storage or can your dining table sit enough people? Also ask yourself if it’s the right scale for the space… and do you actually like it?

Having the right furniture will of course enhance your interiors but can also give rooms better flow and make them more functional. With a growing range of affordable online furniture stores, such as Dreamo Living, it’s possible to buy quality furniture online.

3. Display your special objects

Too often, many of us hide away special items. Whether it’s a decor piece that’s been handed down to you, or drawings the kids have done, find ways of incorporating objects you love into your home styling.

Sure, these family heirlooms and kids craft projects may not perfectly suit your interiors but do they make you smile? A beautiful home isn’t a display home — it’s one that’s meaningful to you. So don’t be afraid to break a few design rules!

4. Create a styled vignette… or three!

An interior styling secret is to create a vignette or styled arrangement on blank surfaces around your home. For example, a console table in your entry, your coffee table, bedside table, sideboard and dining table are all perfect spots for a vignette.

Creating styled arrangements tell a story about you, your interests and your personal style. By sprinkling these around your home, you create threads or linkages between room. It brings a sense of cohesion to your interior styling and elevates things to the next level. Find our top tips to styling an arrangement here.

5. Think beyond your front door

Finally, your home doesn’t simply exist within the four walls of your house. Your front entry and garden have a huge impact on making your house feel like home.

Not only is your entry and garden the first impression people have of your home, modern houses are designed to connect the indoors and out. So if your view is less than desirable, it’s worth putting on the gardening gloves or calling in backup to transform your outdoors.
